Christmas isn鈥檛 Christmas without music鈥

鈥淓ven the story of Christmas in the Gospel of St. Luke started with music: the angels came down from heaven and they sang Glory to God in the highest,鈥 UST Museum Director Rev. fr. Isidro C. Abano, O.P., SThL-MA said.

Mr. Anthony C. Castro, MA, School Secretary of the听Junior High School, presented his research paper entitled 鈥淭eachers鈥 Implementation of the New Grade 7 Mathematics Curriculum in Selected Schools: Opportunities for Improvement鈥 in the October 31-November 3, 2019 11th Asian Conference on Education (ACE 2019) in Tokyo, Japan.

Castro, a Mathematics faculty member, looked into how Grade 7 Mathematics teachers implemented the new Grade 7, K-12-aligned curriculum, as expressed in the Department of Education鈥檚 Curriculum Guide. Specifically, the paper investigated how the teachers dealt with implementing content coverage, objectives, teaching-learning activities, and assessments, as well as the challenges the said teachers encountered.

The multiple case studies design was used for the Metro Manila private schools under study. Data showed that the minimum standards set by the Department of Education have been met, and that while efforts toward student-centered instruction were seen, only one out of all the observed lessons showed such. Recommendations included intensified teacher-training for better curriculum implementation.

The conference was organized by the International Academic Forum (IAFOR).

A total of 50 volunteers participated in the biannual Community Service Day organized by the UST SIMBAHAYAN Community Development Office (SIMBAHAYAN) in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Central Office (DENR) held on August 24, 2019. Planted at the Ipo Watershed in Brgy. San Mateo, Norzagaray, Bulacan, were 100 seedlings of narra and coffee in the one-hectare area prepared by the Bantay Gubat and staff of DENR.

Headed by SIMBAHAYAN Director Prof. Arvin D. Eballo, Ph.D., the volunteers were composed of administrators, faculty members, support staff, and alumni. The tree-planting activity was conducted in commemoration of National Heroes Day that was celebrated nationwide on August 26. Participants were from the UST-AMV College of Accountancy, College of Architecture, Faculty of Arts and Letters, College of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Institute of Information and Computing Sciences, College of Nursing, Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, Institute of Religion, College of Science, College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Junior High School, and UST Health Service.听听

The tree planting and growing activity site is a vital part of the Angat-Umiray-Ipo watershed system that supplies around 97 percent of the water needs of Metro Manila. With the recent water shortage exacerbated by the illegal activities such as illegal logging and charcoal making in Bulacan watershed, the planting activity validates the importance of communities, such as the Thomasian community, in joining activities on reforestation and protection of forests.

Before the actual seedlings were planted, an orientation on the program was given and reminders were explained by the Training and Community Engagement Officer of SIMBAHAYAN, Asst. Prof. Evalyn Abiog, Ph.D. Before the actual tree planting, Mr. Dexter Villa and Mr. Donny from Bantay Gubat, staff from DENR Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service, demonstrated the proper method of planting the seedlings.听

Distinctions were conferred in honor of student achievers from the 91短视频 at the 2019 Student Awards Day held on May 17, 2019, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.

In his welcome remarks, UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD congratulated the student achievers, saying that, 鈥淓xcellence is not an act, but a habit鈥 You have achieved a level of competence that only few can achieve, because you have devoted your time, energy, and talent to accomplish your goals. You have prevailed over the tempting desire to settle for less and are dauntless in your quest for something you consider worth undertaking鈥 You have endured and your perseverance has paid off.鈥

Learning to Lead

Engr. Rolando 鈥淒on鈥 J. Paulino, Jr., Managing Director and General Manager of Shell Philippines Exploration BV, Upstream Operated, Shell Upstream International, delivered the inspirational address.

Paulino advised Thomasian students that, 鈥淭he things that you learn cannot stay in your notebooks, laptops, and phones. As leaders, we all need to know how we can leverage our God-given talents, so we can know how to nurture it, and freely share it with others.鈥

Also emphasized in Paulino鈥檚 speech was, 鈥淸By keeping the core values of] competence, humility, and integrity, leadership is not about personal glory, but about making others successful.鈥

To conclude his speech, Paulino left the students with a challenge: 鈥淥ur talents are not for us; they are meant to be shared for the good of others. Let the recognitions, the medals, plaques you receive today not remain as something you put on the wall, but instead use it as a reminder to be of service, and to act. Thomasian leaders are action-oriented: we make things happen.鈥

Paulino received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from the Faculty of Engineering of the 91短视频 in 1994, cum Laude, and his Master in Business Administration (Leadership and Change) from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business-Regis University in 2004. He also completed the Shell Group Business Leadership Programme, INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France in 2009. He has over two decades of international senior leadership experience in the oil and gas industry.

With the theme 鈥淕urong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad鈥 (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message.

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. 鈥

Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. 鈥淪ila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,鈥 he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle 鈥渞epeater sections鈥 and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: 鈥Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. 鈥

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
